Science

At St George's our aim is to provide the pupils with a broad, balanced and relevant science curriculum which fires their curiosity about phenomena in the world around them and offers opportunities to find explanations through experimentation, investigation and modelling of that world. Much of the teaching is hands on giving pupils an important opportunity to develop practical skills and nurture a sense of enquiry. Science is taught throughout the school with specialist teaching from Year 6 to 8.

We aim to promote positive attitudes and values towards, and enthusiasm for, Science work. It is important that we prepare our pupils with the skills that will support them in their preparation for the Common Entrance and Public Schools Scholarship exams in Year 8. Our aim is also to encourage critical and creative thinking in the subject. It is important that young people today are properly prepared with the skills that will enable them to make informed decisions on many issue which have a scientific basis and which will affect their lives e.g. global warming, genetic research and many others.

The science department is currently undergoing an exciting new development which will see the building of two modern fully equipped laboratories to ensure our pupils can continue to access all aspects of the science curriculum.

The science department invites guest speakers form astronomers to reptile rescuers and due to our ideal location we are able to organize a wide range of school visits to places nearby such as the Science and Natural History museum in London, science centres such as INTECH in Winchester and the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

Our school has a thriving astronomy club which runs throughout the year and with the aid of robotic telescopes in Hawaii and Australia the pupils are able to make observations and take pictures in real time during school hours.

It is our aim to make every pupil's experience of the subject an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
