Music Curriculum Overview
Summer Term 2011

Year 1

Rhythm Building – building a series of 4-beat rhythms using notes and words, notation, analyse rhythmic patters in well known folk songs, improvised composition

Guided Listening:  Children’s Overture

Singing:  focus on performance skills and simple part work using ostinatos and both tuned and un-tuned percussion

Year 2

Exploring duration: discriminating between longer and shorter sounds and using them to create sequences

Instruments and Symbols:  practical component and developing an understanding of how sounds may be changed

Practical: classroom instruments

Singing:  continuation of song repertoire from around the world

Year 3

Minstrels, knights and dragons: lullabies and minstrel songs

Guided Listening: Schumann [Album for the Young] and Debussy Children’s Corner

World Music: folksongs with background (European – tie in with Listening)

Composition and Performance: The Princess and the Pea

Notation Games: rhythm and pitch studies

Groovy Music: Shapes – ICT programme

Year 4

Introduction to Opera – contd:  Barefoot Opera Books Hansel and Gretel.

The Language of opera - Aria/Recitiative/Duet/Trio etc/Chorus/Overture

Folk Music of the World: continuation of work from Spring Term – songs, instruments and customs

Composition:  Melody writing and cadences. Recitative and an aria for a class opera – words and music

Year 5

Groovy Music:  Jungle – ICT programme

The Musical – an introduction:  sing selected repertoire from a variety of musicals [content TBD]

Periods in Music:  The Baroque [Dates, Fashions, Styles, Characteristics, Main Composers and Highlighted works covering sacred, secular, instrumental]

Year 6

Preparation for Summer Show – chorus numbers

Rudiments of Composition: Q and A structure in melody [6A]

Introduction to Sibelius continued: differentiated project work

Repertoire Highlights:  Classical Style and Further Milestones in the Classical Period

Score Reading: an introduction

Recorder Consort:  class tuition for 6X groups TBC

Year 7

 

Preparation for Summer Show – chorus numbers

Revision and Extension of USA/African Music

Graphic Scores:  analysis and composition

Music Technology:  Introduction to Music Technology. Recording and simple multi tracking. Playing with sound and synthesized music.

Class Composition and Notation: Putting new and familiar sounds together in graphic score

Year 8

Preparation for Summer Show – chorus numbers

Projects include:

  1. Adverts: The Role of Music in advertising. Watch various adverts and be inspired to write your own (words and music) and present to the class. Small Group topic work.
  2. Preparation for GCSE at secondary school
  3. Composition (all groups):  Form and Structure

With CE and the Year 8 programme, the number of lessons is much reduced.
