Having disposed of the rowdy 'conker' players, the Matron came round the coats and said: "Ah, here's the new boy. I've been unpacking your things, and have brought you your house-shoes. I have marked them inside with a 2. All your things will be marked 2. 2 is your locker here. That's your shelf for boots and shoes, and you sit there to change. Your football things go on that hook, and your overcoat on that. 2 is also your locker in the Dormitory, and 2 your locker in the Third Form Classroom. Leaman, you'd better show Thorndike all his lockers. See that he puts on his shoes, and does his hair, and then take him up to Mrs Bickersteth."
After which speech she departed. 'As you are dining with the Head Master, I hope your table manners are good," said Leaman.
