Assessment

Assessment of pupil progress in physical education is directly related to the subject's declared curricular aims. To this end, pupil attainment is to be addressed within a range of competencies. As a department we acknowledge the fundamental importance of the performance element, however the criteria applied will also recognise achievement within the planning and evaluating elements and give due recognition to pupils' ability to apply these and the apparent effort.

Assessment in PE / Games is not perceived as being dependent on extra tasks or tests, but as an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Continuous formative assessments will enable teachers to review the content and pace of lessons, and support them in providing appropriate tasks that are differentiated to suit the individual whilst providing feedback to the pupil to help them to learn.

Regular recording of pupils' attainments (Summative assessment) will enable teachers to plan for learning appropriate to pupils' needs and inform reporting to pupils, parents, and other colleagues. The P.E & Games department have a Pupil Sports Profile (P.S.P.) for each individual child from years 3-8. This profile will track each child's progress and attainment during the course of their time at St. George's. Reports will refer to pupil progress in respect of all elements covered by the assessment criteria, as well as giving due recognition to the development of personal qualities and any awards or representative honours gained.

It is considered important that pupils have ample opportunity to be involved in assessment of their own and others' work.
